Overview

Druk Path Trek is one of the most popular treks in Bhutan. It starts from Paro Ta Dzong and ends by descending into Motithang area above Thimphu. Druk path trek offers a relatively short journey that separates the two valleys. Although there are very few villages to see, there are beautiful lakes teeming with fish and breathtaking scenery at 4,000 m. During the clear weather, there are magnificent views of the high Himalayan peaks.

Druk Path trek is one of the most popular treks in Bhutan. The trek offers an opportunity to witness pristine lakes, high ridges and a gorgeous natural landscape of blue pine forests. The trekking trails takes us through ancient lhakhangs, dzongs and villages. Comparatively, the Druk Path Trek is an easy hike as the distance between the rest camps is fairly short. The trail leads you through forests of fir, blue pine and dwarf rhododendrons at elevations ranging from 2400 m to 4200 m. Druk Path Trek also offers stunning views of Mt. Gangkar Puensum, the highest unscaled peak in the world.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Paro and sightseeing

During the flight, one will experience breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga (if flying from Kathmandu or Delhi) and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Chomolhari and Mount Jitchu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro International Airport, meet our representative and escorted to Hotel. After lunch visit Rinpung Dzong. This massive fortress is located on a small hill just above the Paro river (Pachu). You have to walk about 15 minutes by crossing an ancient wooden bridge with shingle roofing. The Dzong houses the district administration office and the District Monk body. It was built in 1645 A.D. After then proceed towards Kyichu Lhakhang (Monastery). One of the oldest monasteries in Bhutan, was built in 659 A.D by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet as one of the 108 such monasteries he built in across the Himalayas to spread Buddhism. Back to hotel. Dinner and overnight at hotel.

Dinner

Day 2Paro – Jili Dzong (Distance 7km, 4-5 hrs, camp altitude 3,480m)

After breakfast drive towards Ta Dzong (National Museum) the trek starting point. If the weather is clear the Paro valley can be seen in the lap of snow-capped mountains including Jumolhari. The trek follows a gravel road past a few farms for about 30 minutes and then climbs up a steep ridge before leading through blue pine and fir forests to Damche Gom. After reach the ridge below Jili Dzong, again descend about 100m to the campsite. Overnight at camp.

Day 3Jili Dzong – Jangchulakha (Distance 10 km, 4-5 hrs, camp altitude 3,770m)

Morning, explore Jili Dzong which sits at 3570m. Today begin with a climb for about an hour and a half and then ascend gradually up. The trail passes through thick alpine forest and rhododendrons crossing Jele La and with the magnificent view of Jumolhari. There is a chance to see yaks and yak herders around campsite. Overnight at camp.

Day 4Jangchulakha – Jimilang Tsho (Distance 11 km, 4 hrs, camp altitude 3,870m)

The trail follows the ridge and on a clear day the view of the mountains and valley are marvelous. The campsite is close to the Jimilang Tsho Lake. The lake is known for its giant sized trout.

Day 5Jimilang Tsho – Simkotra Tsho (Distance 11 km, 4 hrs, camp altitude 4,110m)

The trail passes through dwarf rhododendron trees and Janetso Lake. We may come across some yak herder’s camps where we will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of a nomad’s life. The campsite is close to Simkotra Tsho Lake.

Day 6Simkotra Tsho – Phajoding (Distance 10 km, 3-4 hrs, camp altitude 3,750m)

Today the trek makes several short ascents, to summits, traverses broad rocky valleys, some sky burial sites, and crosses the final ridge at Phume la pass (4,100 m). From the pass, on a clear day, the view of Mount “Gangkhar Punsum” – the highest mountain in Bhutan, as well other peaks and the view below of the entire Thimphu valley is spectacular. From this pass, the trek goes downhill to Phajodhing for a night halt. The camp is above Phadjoding.

Day 7Phajodhing – Mothitang - Paro (Distance 4-5 km, 3 hrs)

After passing Phadjoding monastery, the trek to Mothitang all the way downhill through a forested area of mostly blue pine. The walk, at a leisurely pace, takes about three hours. Vehicle will be waiting in Mothitang and drive to Thimphu. After lunch in Thimphu, free for leisure. One can do some shopping. Late afternoon move to Paro. Relax and overnight in Paro.

Day 8Departure Day / Paro (by Druk Air).

After breakfast free till departure. Transfer to the airport for onward journey.

When to Travel?

The best seasons for trekking to the Everest Base Camp are Autumn (Sept to Dec) and Spring (March to May). The weather is sunny and warm making the views outstanding in these seasons. The weather condition is the primary issue during the Winter (Jan to Feb) season for trekking to Everest Base Camp. The region offers a freezing cold during winter. Just opposite to this, EBC trek gets affected by monsoon during Summer/ rainy season (June to August). Nevertheless, this time is the appropriate time for a keen and enthusiastic Botanist.
